Antarctica

Antarctica usually refers to the landmass at the South Pole, but there are several islands separate from the main continent that are included in the region. The main Antarctic continent is accessible, but may be a little too remote and have harsher conditions than appropriate for a school visit; if considering visiting the region, the more northerly islands would be best. 

The islands are all located nearer the coast of South America than Antarctica, but still have a reasonably cold polar climate. However, there is a reasonable tourist trade in the Falkland Islands and a growing interest in the South Georgian Islands, which are especially famous for their varied bird populations. Although remote and mainly accessed by sea, taking a trips here would be rewarding in seeing the way that people live in this distant locations and learning about the wildlife that thrives in this climate; the combination of Antarctic and South African influences mean that the nature here is fascinating to learn about - these destinations could be particularly good for trips revolving around natural science.
