Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum

Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum

Worcester's principal art gallery and museum hosts a unique programme of contemporary art exhibitions, as well as housing a historic picture collection and an intriguing selection of objects ranging from a 19th century chemist's shop to the wonderful Regimental Museum.

As well as regularly changing Museum and Gallery exhibitions, we have an atmospheric Balcony Cafe and an excellently stocked Gift Shop all of which is fully assessable to all.

The Bredon Hill Hoard

On 18 June, 2011, metal detectorists uncovered an assemblage of 3,874 Roman coins which date from 244 to 282 AD on farmland below Bredon Hill. This is the largest hoard ever discovered in Worcestershire.

The initial exhibition of the hoard at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum (Oct & Nov 2011) was incredibly popular:

  • 3,405 visitors to the exhibition
  • 140 positive written comments about saving the hoard for Worcestershire
  • Just over £1,500 donated towards acquiring the hoard for the museum collection

These are great figures for a museum the size of Worcester's and far exceeded expectations for the exhibition. The hoard is currently going through a process laid down in the Treasure Act. We hope to keep the hoard in Worcestershire.

Schools

We are happy to discuss your individual requirements before you visit and we can adapt our workshop programme to suit your needs. We also have a specific needs specialist on our education team who can help organise and facilitate your visit whatever the age, ability or size of group.

Workshop Activities offered by Gallery Education Staff

The Art Gallery has a small education team, which includes freelancers and artists. We can devise sessions to meet your needs and respond to current teaching programmes. We also offer the following workshops for school groups.
