Waters Edge Visitor Centre

Waters Edge Visitor Centre

The Waters Edge Country Park, provides a relaxing and stimulating day out for people of all ages. Situated to the north of Barton-Upon-Humber, on the edge of the Humber estuary, Waters Edge contains a wide diversity of plant and wildlife. Established in 1996 on a site which had previously been a series of clay quarries, Waters Edge has breathed new life into what was once a derelict area.

At the core of the country park is the new Waters Edge Visitors Centre which was completed in 2006. With an excellent BREEAM accreditation and a stunning curved glass frontage, the Centre contains interactive displays about wildlife and sustainability issues such as climate change. There are also live images of wildlife around the park, games and other activities for people of all ages.

The design of the Centre is intended to promote the principles of sustainable living. Sustainable elements include a biomass boiler, a non-flush urinal system to reduce water usage, solar-voltaics to generate electricity, a water-recycling system which includes rainwater capture and grey water recycling and sustainably sourced timber. All aspects of sustainability are clearly interpreted throughout the Centre. There is also an excellent cafe – the HoneyPot which is open 7 days a week serving organic food.

From the Visitors Centre you can take one of the many signposted walks around the 86 acre Country Park. The park contains 2 SSSI’s and several rare species of bird, plant and animals. There are various habitats to explore including freshwater lakes, rare saltmarsh and mudflat making it ideal for numerous species of migrating bird. The views across the Humber are also stunning. Entry to the Waters Edge Country Park and Visitors Centre is free, so come down and experience this wonderful place.
