National Civil War Centre

National Civil War Centre

Which Side Will You Choose?

It was Britain's deadliest conflict and one which shaped our modern world. Why did brother take up arms against brother and how did a once all-powerful monarch lose his head to the axeman?

Discover how the people of Newark survived three sieges by dodging cannon fire, hammering flat family silver to make coins, only for plague to ravage the town. Put yourself on the front line, feel the weight of armour and weapons and aim to destroy the Governor’s House as a Parliamentarian gunner.

Visit us at the brand new, £5.4m National Civil War Centre!

The collection is diverse in its nature and ranges from Palaeolithic hand axes to 21st century Nike boots. Its’ scope comprises; Civil War, Natural, Local and  Social History, Photographs, Art, Costume, Military, Numismatics and Archives including maps and documents.

Currently the collection is stored at a purpose built Resource Centre which provides the best environmental conditions to ensure their preservation for future generations.

Learning

The National Civil War Centre offers an exciting and varied programme for learners of all ages. Our schools programme, which has been developed in partnership with our Learning Forum compliments the new National Curriculum and provides tailored workshops for GCSE, A level and Further and Higher Education students.

We also offer a range of talks, tours and workshops as part of a group visit.

Civil War Trail

Experience the amazing story of Newark under siege through our ground-breaking Augmented Reality Trail app. The trail app (scheduled for release after April) will enable you to point your device at trigger zones within the Centre or on the Civil War Trail, and watch characters spring to life to tell their own, often heart-rending, stories.

To see what else Newark has to offer why not visit the Civic Trust Trails and experience other interesting historical trails to complement our own
