Fan Museum
Fan Museum
The Fan Museum holds a world-renowned collection of fans and fan leaves which include the splendid Hélène Alexander Collection and further acquisitions, gifts and bequests which have been received since the museum opened to the public over twenty years ago.
The collection is comprehensive, with examples from all over the world from the 12th century to the present day. The collection is particularly strong in 18th and 19th century European fans.
Group Visits
The Fan Museum extends a warm invitation to organised groups of 10 – 32 people. We can cater for a wide variety of visiting groups from WIs and adult learners to universities and decorative arts societies.
Guided Tours
Enjoy a guided tour led by one of the museum’s experienced curators. These tours make for an entertaining yet educative way to see The Fan Museum and learn something of the history fans and fan-making.
Workshops
We hold regular fan making workshops on the first Saturday afternoon of each month. These sessions are conducted by an experienced tutor who will not only provide expert guidance, but also a wealth of knowledge about the history and craft of fans.
The classes start at 14.00hrs and last approximately 3 hours during which the participants will make two fans: one of the traditional Chinese shape, the other of the Fontange shape, an early 20th century design. Fan Sticks, equipment and tea/coffee and biscuits are provided by the Museum, all you have to bring with you is two different sheets of paper. Gift wrap is suitable, but not too shiny or folded.
