Braunton and District Museum

Braunton and District Museum

The Bakehouse Centre was specially converted from a former bakehouse and two cottages to house today's Museum.

Museum Staff are pleased to welcome visitors and offer a guided tour if requested. A printed guide to the collection is also available.

There are new exhibitions on the maritime history and a photographic history of the village.

Braunton's Maritime Heritage

From February 2012, alongside the existing diorama of Vellator Quay, there is a new interactive multimedia display showing interviews with 2 old mariners. Many model vessels made by Sam Mitchell are on display along with a variety of maritime artefacts.

Henry Williamson

Henry Williamson: This display is based in a prominent part of the museum – the vestibule. Photographs and information on the local writer of Tarka the Otter fame.

Great Field & Agricultural Collection

The Fiddle: Used manually for broadcast seed sowing. A bow was used in conjunction with the fiddle, it was carried underarm with a harness around the opposite shoulder, the bow was inserted through the base of the fiddle and used in a side to side movement which scattered the seed

Military History

Displays spanning the two world conflicts. The training that took place on the "Burrows" in 1943/4 was instrumental in the winning of the battle for Normandy. A Heritage Lottery grant in 2009 enabled the museum to tell the story of the historic importance of the area.
